Credit Unions of Alberta

For most Canadians, financial institutions come in two forms: a brick-and-mortar bank or the online version of the same thing. But for over 10 million Canadians (and counting), there is an alternative option – credit unions. Credit unions look like a bank, walk like a bank and talk like a bank, so what makes them so unique? We answered this during our conversation with Mr. Burns and learned how credit unions have paved the way of banking innovation in Canada to become a niche in the financial industry. Here are 8 things you need to know about the Credit Unions of Alberta.

Patak’s 3-Step Kits

I grew up in a Lebanese family in which food played a starring role. Before we could finish one meal, my mom was already asking what we wanted for the next one. Despite working all day, my mom always had dinner on the table every day at 5:00- a feat I did not appreciate until I was much older. Eating dinner together was a non-negotiable in our house. No matter how busy our lives got, the one thing we could depend on was a home-cooked meal. Even if it meant my mom being in the kitchen until 9 pm preparing dinner for the next day. Like my mother, I understand the importance of a home-cooked meal. Unlike my mother, I do not plan my dinners three days in advance, sometimes even one day ahead is pushing it. This usually results with me scrambling for ideas only to realize I am…

Lui-Chi’s Coffee

One of my top-five favorite TV shows is Boardwalk Empire. Boardwalk Empire tells the story of a twenties gang called the Big Seven Group and their rise to gangster fame. The Big Seven came together to bring people booze during Prohibition by smuggling barrels of Canadian Club whisky across the border. Gangsters like Al Capone, Arnold Rothstein, Nucky Johnson, Meyer Lansky and, my personal favorite, Lucky Luciano. Why is this relevant? It’s relevant because right now in my top-five favorite Edmonton coffee shops is Lui-Chi’s. A shop that sells wood roasted, whisky barrel aged coffee (see what I did there? Luciano-Lui-Chis, whisky barrels… you get it).

Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich Recipe

Philly cheesesteaks are iconic, and for good reason. A well-made one can be a thing of beauty. All of the ingredients kind of… fuse together. Thinly shaved beef, glistening caramelized onions, melty gooey cheese – all loaded on a perfectly toasted roll (pause to wipe drool). Making cheesesteaks at home doesn’t require any fancy moves, only the willingness to turn your kitchen into a South Philly hoagie shop.

On November 7th, the date is 11/7 (7/11 in reverse), and 7-Eleven is celebrating in backwards style by giving out free medium Slurpee drinks. The twist? You have to wear your clothing backwards.
